Harold Melvin, born in Philadelphia, was a key figure in Philadelphia soul, leading the Blue Notes to fame with hits like "If You Don't Know Me By Now." Known for lush productions and Teddy Pendergrass's vocals, Melvin's group shone in the 70s but saw decline after Pendergrass left.
