Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan; April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959) was an American jazz and swing music singer. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and music partner Lester Young, she rose to prominence in the 1930s and became one of the most influential jazz vocalists of all time, known for her innovative phrasing, dramatic intensity, and improvisational skills. Her notable recordings include "Strange Fruit," "God Bless the Child," and the 1958 album Lady in Satin. Despite a turbulent childhood and a lifelong struggle with substance abuse and legal challenges, she left an enduring legacy and was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
