Hermann Karl Hesse was a German-Swiss poet and novelist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. Born in Calw, Germany, in 1877, his works explored the individual's search for authenticity, self-knowledge, and spirituality beyond civilization's norms. His best-known novels include Demian, Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, and The Glass Bead Game, which heavily reflect his interests in Eastern philosophy, spiritual growth, and Jungian psychoanalysis.
