Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion, a monumental Baroque sacred oratorio from 1727, masterfully retells the Passion story. Composed in Leipzig with libretto by Picander, its double choir and orchestra create a profound, dramatic experience, widely considered a pinnacle of classical music. It was revived by Felix Mendelssohn in 1829.
