From Manchester, The Membranes pioneered a dark post-punk sound in the early '80s, becoming an influence on bands like Napalm Death and My Bloody Valentine. They were the first band to record with Steve Albini outside his own projects in 1986. After a 20-year break, they returned in 2015, with their 2019 album "What Nature Gives...Nature Takes Away" earning critical acclaim for its epic soundscapes.
