Oakland's Hieroglyphics, an influential rap collective known for offbeat underground style, founded their own label, Hieroglyphics Imperium, in 1997. Famous for hits like "93 'Til Infinity", they've managed success through independent control and popular tours.

Casual, a standout member of Oakland's Hieroglyphics crew, emerged post-Del and Souls of Mischief. Known for fierce freestyles and hits like "Didn't Mean To," he excelled with the 1994 album Fear Itself and contributed to the famed Hiero album Third Eye Vision.

Pep Love, Jackson-born rapper/producer, moved to Berkeley in his teens, embraced hip hop deeply. Known for his work with Hieroglyphics, started The Shamen with Jaybiz. Through adversity, including legal issues, his artistry grew, influencing and shaping his unique lyrical style.
