Blues is one of the oldest musical genres that originated in the US. The origins of this genre can be traced back to the 1860s. This music genre was largely popularized by the African-American population in the South. It started appearing more prominently after the ending of slavery in the US – most of the early propagators of blues were slaves, former slaves, or descendants of slaves.
It is believed that blues derived a lot of elements from spirituals, work songs, ballads, chants, shouts, and field hollers done by African-Americans. Blues take a vocal form, where the focus is on the lyrics and not the narrative.
Blues is also one of the most influential genres that gave rise to other genres such as rock 'n roll, rhythm 'n blues, jazz, and country. As you may already know, rock ‘n roll in turn gave birth to rock, a highly popular contemporary musical genre. Elvis Presley dubbed the king of rock and roll, drew heavily from the blues.
