History of Blues Music

Blues is one of the oldest musical genres that originated in the US. The origins of this genre can be traced back to the 1860s. This music genre was largely popularized by the African-American population in the South. It started appearing more prominently after the ending of slavery in the US – most of the early propagators of blues were slaves, former slaves, or descendants of slaves.

It is believed that blues derived a lot of elements from spirituals, work songs, ballads, chants, shouts, and field hollers done by African-Americans. Blues take a vocal form, where the focus is on the lyrics and not the narrative.

Blues is also one of the most influential genres that gave rise to other genres such as rock 'n roll, rhythm 'n blues, jazz, and country. As you may already know, rock ‘n roll in turn gave birth to rock, a highly popular contemporary musical genre. Elvis Presley dubbed the king of rock and roll, drew heavily from the blues.

Biggest Blues Concerts

If you are a blues fan, you would not want to miss the Chicago Blues Festival – one of the largest blues concerts in the world. The city of Chicago has a special connection with blues, as it is one of the first cities where blues traveled from rural areas. There is even a regional blues variant called Chicago blues.

Fancy enjoying a barbecue while watching blues shows? If yes, the Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival that takes place in Henderson, Kentucky is right up your alley.

There is also the Long Beach Blues Festival – the second oldest festival on the West Coast that takes place annually in Long Beach, California.

What Seats are the Best at a Concert

People always like to sit in the front row as they can be closer to the show and their favorite artists. However, the sound levels can be expected to be high up close, but since blues music is not usually loud and rather melodic, you should be fine.
