History of Country Music

Country music is a genre of popular music that originated in the USA in the early 1920s. It used to be called hillbilly music until the term was largely replaced by the term country music. The genre was popularized mainly by working-class Americans from the South and Southwestern, particularly in the Appalachian Mountains.

The US Congress formally recognizes Bristol, Tennessee as the birthplace of Country music, owing to the fact that the first official recording sessions of this genre were conducted in studios in Bristol.

Country music is a mix of genres such as Appalachian folk and blues. It is often accompanied by a variety of string instruments, such as acoustic guitars, electric guitars, steel guitars, fiddles, and banjos. It also often makes use of harmonicas.

In 2009, Country music became the favorite genre to listen to while commuting. It was the most listened-to genre during the evening rush hour commute and the second most popular during the morning commute.
