Folk music refers to traditional folk music, and its offshoot, contemporary folk music. ‘Folk’ is another word for ‘people’ and folk music can be described as people’s music. It is a form of informal music that is passed orally between people and generations, often among a small group of people. And it is often impossible to find the original composer of a song – the song belongs to a group rather than an individual.
Traditional folk music is commonly associated with folklore. It has strong ties to a particular culture or national identity, where it most likely originated from. It is a form of music that is sung as a custom and is often played on traditional instruments. Due to its nature, it’s most prevalent in rural areas.
Folk music went through a period of revival between the 1940s and 1960s. The result of this revival effort is contemporary folk music, which also incorporates subgenres such as folk rock, folk metal, etc.
One of the first music festivals in modern America, the Newport Folk Fest has been in action since 1959. It takes place annually in Newport, Rhode Island, and has featured shows from the likes of American folk legend Bob Dylan.
Feast of the Hunters' Moon which takes place in West Lafayette, Indiana is a heavily attended folk festival that draws about 60000 visitors each year. The festival also showcases various historical re-enactments in addition to folk concerts.
The Philadelphia Folk Festival is another prominent event that occurs annually in Upper Salford, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. It is run by the non-profit organization Philadelphia Folksong Society.
Naturally, you would want to stay as close as possible to the stage and the performers. However, this is not a very good idea. The sound quality is actually better when you are a little farther away. Moreover, your field of view will be able to capture the entire stage.
