Referred to as America's classical music by some, jazz is a musical genre that originated around the early 20th century in New Orleans, Louisiana among the African-American communities that lived there. The roots of jazz can be traced to blues and ragtime.
The genre entered into something called the ‘Jazz Age’ – the period between 1920 and 1940, during which it gained nationwide popularity. The first jazz recordings were produced in 1917. In earlier times, jazz was meant more for dancing.
The defining feature of jazz is how the performers improvise for each song – the same song can be performed in a different way. It is also very rhythmic and commonly includes call and response patterns.
Over the course of a century, jazz branched into various subgenres, such as Bebop and cool jazz in the 1940s, hard bob and Modal jazz in the 1950s, Jazz-rock hybrid in the 1960s and 70s, and the commercially successful smooth jazz in the 1980s.
You can witness some of the greatest jazz concerts at the Monterey Jazz Festival, which is by the way the longest-running jazz festival in the world. This 3-day festival takes place in Monterey, California every year. It is one large fest – it spans a whopping 20 acres.
Why not celebrate jazz in its birthplace? New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is a great outdoor event that takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Rochester International Jazz Festival should also be up on your list.
Jazz music concerts are intimate affairs where the performer takes the center stage – figuratively as well as literally. As such, you would want to be as close as possible to the stage, as long as you are okay with being close to the loudspeakers. A few rows back aren’t such a bad place either.
