Richard Lynn Carpenter, born in New Haven, Connecticut, is famed as half of the 1970s soft rock duo the Carpenters with sister Karen. Renowned for hits like "(They Long to Be) Close to You," the duo won four Grammys and produced twelve Top Ten hits. After Karen's death, Richard pursued solo projects and production, notably working with Dusty Springfield and others.
