Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), an English composer from Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, championed a nationalist style rooted in folk music. His enduring works include the beloved Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and The Lark Ascending. A central figure in British music's renaissance, he composed nine symphonies and received the Order of Merit.
