Born in Lvov, Poland, Emanuel Ax is a classical pianist known for chamber music and collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma. He won the 1974 Arthur Rubinstein Competition and the 1979 Avery Fisher Prize, and earned Grammy wins for his Haydn piano sonata cycle.
Ludwig van Beethoven, a German composer and pianist from Bonn, bridged the Classical and Romantic eras with his innovative, emotionally intense music. Renowned for works like the "Moonlight Sonata," Fifth Symphony, and Ninth Symphony, he revolutionized instrumental music, elevating it to high art. He continued composing despite profound deafness.
Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring," a groundbreaking 1913 ballet and orchestral work, originated in Paris. A landmark of musical Modernism, it is known for its brutal rhythms, dissonance, and Russian folk influences. Created with Sergei Diaghilev, Nicholas Roerich, and Vaslav Nijinsky, its premiere caused a historic sensation. It profoundly shaped 20th-century music.
Kansas City Symphony is a Kansas City-based orchestra founded in the early 1980s, performing at the Kauffman Center and with the city’s Lyric Opera and Ballet. Led by music director Michael Stern since 2004, it records for Reference Recordings and earned two 2017 Grammy nominations.
