Earth, Wind & Fire, formed in Chicago by Maurice White in 1969, fused funk, jazz, soul, gospel, and disco. Known for hits like "Shining Star" and "September," they won multiple Grammys and collaborated with artists like Kenny G. Their stage shows were vibrant and elaborate, akin to P-Funk's spectacles. Enshrining a blend of cosmic and uplifting styles, they were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010. Members included lead singer Philip Bailey and the Phoenix Horns. White passed in 2016, leaving a legacy of musical innovation and spirit.
Zapp, led by Roger Troutman, revolutionized '80s funk with their vocoder talk boxes and grooves. From Hamilton, OH, they collaborated with Bootsy Collins, scoring hits like "More Bounce to the Ounce" and "Dance Floor." Roger's solo successes included "I Want to Be Your Man." Known for their influence on electro-funk, they played a role in Dr. Dre & 2Pac's "California Love." The group's lasting legacy was marked by platinum success and tragic loss in 1999.
Anthony Hamilton, born in Charlotte, NC, is known for his rugged yet graceful R&B voice. After early career struggles, he broke through with "Comin' from Where I'm From" in 2003. Hamilton's notable collaborations include Al Green, with whom he won a Grammy for "You've Got the Love I Need." His hits like "Charlene" and albums "Back to Love" and "What I'm Feelin'" earned Grammy nods. He's collaborated with artists like Babyface and Nas, and founded the My Music Box label for his 2021 album "Love Is the New Black."
Philadelphia-born Jazmine Sullivan is known for her soulful R&B style. Her debut album "Fearless" topped charts, earning seven Grammy nominations.
