Martin Newell's Cleaners from Venus, known for witty, cheery '80s British pop, recorded on self-produced cassettes. Their hit "Living with Victoria Grey" led to wider recognition. Collaborations included drummer Lol Elliott and pianist Giles Smith. Their unique sound blended jangly guitars and heartfelt vocals, drawing comparisons to Ray Davies and XTC. Despite brief major label spells, Newell continued his eclectic style in later projects, including Brotherhood of Lizards. Their music was reissued in the 2000s, maintaining their cult status.
