Oakland hip-hop group Digital Underground, led by Shock-G (Gregory E. Jacobs), broke through with P-Funk-inspired funk rap. Their 1990 debut Sex Packets went platinum, powered by “The Humpty Dance” (No. 11 pop), featuring his alter ego Humpty Hump.

New York-area hip-hop trio formed by producer Sylvia Robinson, Sugarhill Gang (Master Gee, Wonder Mike, Big Bank Hank) broke through with 1979 multi-platinum worldwide hit “Rapper’s Delight,” which sold over 8 million copies. Also had modest hits “8th Wonder” and “Apache.”
