Barbados-born rapper and pioneering human beatbox Doug E. Fresh debuted on 1983’s “Pass the Budda.” Known for “The Show/La Di Da Di” with the Get Fresh Crew (incl. Slick Rick). Albums include 1987’s Oh, My God! and 1988’s The World’s Greatest Entertainer.
Buckshot, from '90s group Black Moon, went solo with 'The BDI Thug' in 1999. Known for collaboration with 9th Wonder, albums 'Chemistry' & 'The Formula' revived his reputation.
Long Island rapper Rakim (born William Griffin Jr. in Wyandanch) pioneered internal rhymes and raised the bar for MC technique. Half of Eric B. & Rakim behind Paid in Full; solo albums include The 18th Letter and G.O.Ds Network - Reb7rth.
KRS-One (born Kris Parker) is a hardcore hip-hop rapper best known as leader of Boogie Down Productions and for political, socially conscious raps that earned him the nickname “the Teacher.” Key releases include Edutainment and solo debut Return of the Boom Bap.
Brooklyn-born rapper Big Daddy Kane (Antonio Hardy) rose in the late ’80s, joining Marley Marl’s Juice Crew. His 1988 single “Raw” and albums Long Live the Kane and It’s a Big Daddy Thing yielded classics like “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’” and “Smooth Operator.”
Born in South Wimbledon, London to Jamaican parents, Slick Rick is an early hip-hop storytelling icon. His 1988 debut The Great Adventures of Slick Rick went platinum, spawning hits “Children’s Story” and “Teenage Love.” His Top 10 album The Art of Storytelling featured Nas, Snoop Dogg, and OutKast.
New York City DJ Cassidy was discovered at club Lotus and hired by Diddy for an MTV Video Music Awards party in 2001. Signed to Columbia, he drew on late-’70s/early-’80s R&B and released Paradise Royale (2014), preceded by Calling All Hearts.
Queens (South Jamaica) hardcore rap group Onyx broke big with “Slam” & “Throw Ya Gunz”; Bacdafucup went platinum, won 1994 Soul Train Rap Album; worked with Jam Master Jay & Biohazard.
Queens native Havoc, known for gritty '90s hardcore rap, co-founded Mobb Deep with Prodigy, creating iconic beats on The Infamous. He produced for Nas and Biggie, released solo albums like The Kush, and collaborated with the Alchemist. Contributions include Kanye West's The Life of Pablo.
Brownsville, Brooklyn rap duo Smif-N-Wessun (Tek and Steele) debuted on Black Moon’s Enta da Stage (1993). Known for gritty East Coast hip-hop with dancehall/reggae influence, they released Dah Shinin’ (1995), rebranded as Cocoa Brovaz, and later returned with Pete Rock’s Monumental (2011).
Jamaican dancehall icon Super Cat, aka Wild Apache, fused reggae, hip-hop & R&B. Known for hits like "Mr. Walker" and "Fly," he won Dancehall Artist of the Year (1993).
Brooklyn hardcore rap duo M.O.P. (Lil’ Fame & Billy Danze): hits “How About Some Hardcore”; albums To the Death, Firing Squad, Warriorz; collab’d w/ Jay‑Z.
