New Orleans R&B bassist George Porter, Jr. co-founded the Meters with Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli and Zigaboo Modeliste, a premier funk band of the ’60s and ’70s. A sought-after session musician, he released Runnin’ Partner (1990), Funk This (1997).
Dumpstaphunk is a New Orleans funk band formed at Jazz Fest in 2003. Blending gritty grooves with rock and jazz, they’ve built a reputation for electrifying live shows, opened for the Rolling Stones in New Orleans, and toured with Dave Matthews Band.
New Orleans-born musician Cyril Neville, youngest of the Neville Brothers, began singing professionally in 1967. He joined the Meters on vocals and congas, appearing on Cabbage Alley and Fire on the Bayou. Solo work includes The Fire This Time and Soulo.
Leo Nocentelli, born in New Orleans, is a founding member of the Meters, known for their pioneering funk. Celebrated for hits like "Cissy Strut," he has a unique guitar style blending blues, rock, jazz, and funk. Collaborated with legends like Stevie Wonder and Etta James, and his work appears on soundtracks like White Men Can't Jump. His lost 1971 solo album "Another Side," featuring Meters members, was released in 2021.
New Orleans-born Trombone Shorty blends jazz, funk, and brass with hits and a 2022 Grammy. He’s performed globally with stars like Pharrell and Bruno Mars. New Breed Brass Band, Grammy-nominated, adds fresh energy to the city’s vibrant scene.
