C+C Music Factory, formed in 1989 in New York City by David Cole and Robert Clivillés, pioneered an infectious blend of house, hip hop, and pop. Known for hits like "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)," they earned 35 awards, including five American Music Awards. Their influential sound featured vocalists such as Freedom Williams and Martha Wash.
Rob Base, born Robert Ginyard in Harlem, is best known for the hip-hop classic "It Takes Two" with DJ E-Z Rock. The duo's album went platinum and Spin named it Single of the Year. After releasing a solo album, Base reunited with E-Z Rock for Break of Dawn in 1994. E-Z Rock passed away in 2014 and was honored at the Hip Hop Hall of Fame.
Brenda K. Starr, born in New York City, is known for her pop and salsa hits. Her Grammy-nominated song "I Still Believe" was later a hit for Mariah Carey. Brenda's Spanish albums, like "Te Sigo Esperando," achieved Platinum status, and she won two Latin Billboard Awards. Johnny O, born Juan Antonio Ortiz in Brooklyn, New York, is a freestyle and dance-pop singer of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent. Known as "The King of Freestyle," he achieved fame with hits like "Fantasy Girl," "Memories," and the duet "Dream Boy / Dream Girl" with Cynthia. Puerto Rican-American Lisette Melendez, born in East Harlem, gained fame in the early '90s for reviving Latin freestyle. Known for hits like "Together Forever," she collaborated with producer Carlos Berrios and shared stages with Lisa Lisa and Safire. Her debut album topped Billboard's Heatseekers, and she won a Grammy in Japan.
Lisa Velez, known as Lisa Lisa of the 80s supergroup Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, was born in Hell's Kitchen, NYC. Renowned for freestyle and Latin pop hits like "I Wonder If I Take You Home" and "Head to Toe," she was the first Puerto Rican/Latino artist to hit the Pop and R&B charts. Collaborating with Full Force and C&C Music Factory, her platinum hits influenced artists like J-Lo and Cardi B, making her a pivotal figure in Latin music.
NY-based dance-pop group The Cover Girls, formed by Andy Tripoli & Sal Abbatiello in 1986, featured hits like "Show Me" & "Wishing on a Star." Known for constant lineup changes, they peaked with several Top 40 tracks.
Exposé, an iconic American girl group from the 1980s, revolutionized dance-pop and freestyle music with hits like "Point of No Return" and "Seasons Change." Their multi-platinum debut album, Exposure (1987), made history with four top-ten Billboard Hot 100 singles. Members Ann Curless, Jeanette Jurado, and Gioia Bruno captured audiences with dynamic vocals and vibrant beats. Their influence endures, inspiring generations with a timeless sound.
Swedish quartet Ace of Base rose to fame with their 1993 debut "The Sign," selling over 25 million copies. Known for catchy Euro-disco hits like "All That She Wants" and "The Sign," they became Sweden's third most successful band. Jonas Berggren and Ulf Ekberg continued the legacy, bringing in new vocalists.
