Keith Sweat, born in Harlem, is a legendary R&B singer known as a pioneer of new jack swing. His debut album "Make It Last Forever" went triple platinum, featuring the hit "I Want Her." He's famous for songs like "Twisted" and "Nobody." Sweat also shaped Silk and Kut Klose's careers and was part of LSG. With numerous albums and accolades, his impact on R&B is iconic.
After 7, an Indianapolis-born R&B group, debuted in 1989 with hits like "Ready or Not." Known for harmonies and Babyface collaborations, they earned Grammy nods and gold/platinum albums.
Tom Browne, a New York-born trumpeter, rose to R&B fame from 1979-1989 with pop-oriented tunes. He collaborated with Sonny Fortune and Lonnie Smith. Influenced by Freddie Hubbard, he took a break in the late '80s, returned in 1994 with the jazz album "Another Shade of Browne." Also a commercial pilot.
Johnny Gill, born in Washington, D.C., is famed for his deep baritone voice and versatile style. He rose to fame with New Edition's "Heart Break" and solo hits like "My My My." He collaborated with Stacy Lattisaw and was part of LSG with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat, achieving Grammy nods and platinum records. Known for his R&B and new jack swing, he released popular albums through his label J Skillz, continuing his impactful career.
Vivian Green, born in Philadelphia, is known for her sultry R&B voice and hits like "Emotional Roller Coaster" and "Get Right Back To My Baby." Her debut album "A Love Story" went Gold. She collaborated frequently with producer Kwamè Holland and achieved seven R&B hits. Green's music spans themes of love, heartache, and social issues, showcasing her deep, soulful style.
Frankie Beverly, born in Philadelphia, pioneered Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, an influential R&B band known for its soulful sound and live shows. Inspired by Marvin Gaye, Beverly crafted hits like "Happy Feelin's" and "Back in Stride." Maze, popular in the '70s and '80s, earned several gold albums despite limited pop hits. Beverly's bands evolved from Philadelphia's Raw Soul to Maze in the San Francisco Bay Area, with Marvin Gaye facilitating their Capitol Records contract. Despite few '90s hits, Maze's live performances maintained a loyal fan base. Beverly passed away on September 10, 2024.
