Columbus, Georgia-born trombonist Fred Wesley was musical director/arranger for James Brown’s J.B.’s, co-shaping classic funk and writing hits like Doin’ It to Death. He later played with Parliament-Funkadelic, the Count Basie Orchestra, and released solo LPs.
