Rob Base, born Robert Ginyard in Harlem, is best known for the hip-hop classic "It Takes Two" with DJ E-Z Rock. The duo's album went platinum and Spin named it Single of the Year. After releasing a solo album, Base reunited with E-Z Rock for Break of Dawn in 1994. E-Z Rock passed away in 2014 and was honored at the Hip Hop Hall of Fame.
Born in NYC's Latin clubs, TKA signed with Tommy Boy in 1987 after a performance. Known for blending love ballads with hip-hop, hits include "Scars of Love." Released top albums and a greatest hits.
Brenda K. Starr, born in New York City, is known for her pop and salsa hits. Her Grammy-nominated song "I Still Believe" was later a hit for Mariah Carey. Brenda's Spanish albums, like "Te Sigo Esperando," achieved Platinum status, and she won two Latin Billboard Awards. Puerto Rican-American singer Lisette Melendez, born in East Harlem, sparked a '90s Latin freestyle revival with hits like "Together Forever". Known for blending club sounds with Latin pop, she has collaborated with producers like Carlos Berrios and won a Grammy in Japan.
Lisa Velez, known as Lisa Lisa of the 80s supergroup Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, was born in Hell's Kitchen, NYC. Renowned for freestyle and Latin pop hits like "I Wonder If I Take You Home" and "Head to Toe," she was the first Puerto Rican/Latino artist to hit the Pop and R&B charts. Collaborating with Full Force and C&C Music Factory, her platinum hits influenced artists like J-Lo and Cardi B, making her a pivotal figure in Latin music.
Freestyle artist Cynthia, known for hits like “Change on Me,” debuted in 1987. Signed with MicMac, released albums and top tracks including a duet with Johnny O. Later explored club music under Tommy Boy.
NY-based dance-pop group The Cover Girls, formed by Andy Tripoli & Sal Abbatiello in 1986, featured hits like "Show Me" & "Wishing on a Star." Known for constant lineup changes, they peaked with several Top 40 tracks.
