Born in Siena, Gianna Nannini is Italy's foremost female rock singer. She broke through with her 1979 album California and the hit single America, later singing the official 1990 World Cup theme, Un'estate Italiana. Known for her independent lyricism and distinctive raspy voice, she became a major European pop icon.
