Hildegard Knef (1925-2002), born in Ulm, Germany, was a celebrated actress, singer, and writer. Known for her husky voice, she pioneered German chanson with hits like "Für mich soll's rote Rosen regnen". She achieved international fame on Broadway in Cole Porter's "Silk Stockings" and in films like "The Snows of Kilimanjaro". Her candid autobiography, "Der geschenkte Gaul," was a bestseller.
