He executive-produced Jill Scott's debut and ran A Touch of Jazz. With Grammy awards for tracks like "Parents Just Don't Understand" and "Summertime," Townes made waves in hip-hop and R&B. His solo works include The Magnificent trilogy and collaborations with Eric Roberson and Freddie Foxx.
Rakim, born in Wyandanch, Long Island, is a legendary rapper known for his smooth, jazz-influenced flow and intricate lyrics. As part of Eric B. & Rakim, he released classics like *Paid in Full* and *Follow the Leader*. His solo work includes hits like *The 18th Letter*, collaborating with icons like Dr. Dre and Linkin Park. Rakim’s impact on East Coast rap remains unparalleled.
Brooklyn-born Big Daddy Kane, alias for Antonio Hardy, emerged in the late '80s as a hip-hop icon. Known for his smooth style and Afrocentric themes, Kane was part of the Juice Crew, collaborated with Biz Markie, and released classics like "Ain't No Half-Steppin'." He gained fame with hits such as "Smooth Operator" and worked alongside legends like Barry White. Despite a dip with the 1991 album Prince of Darkness, Kane's influence remains substantial in the genre.
Sugarhill Gang, pioneers from New York, launched hip-hop with "Rapper's Delight" in 1979, selling over 8 million copies. Known for hits like "8th Wonder" and "Apache," they faded by mid-80s but returned in 1999.
Ice-T, born Tracy Marrow in Newark, rose to fame as a pioneering gangsta rapper and frontman of the metal band Body Count.
