Born in Louisville, John Cowan was a key figure in the 1980s bluegrass revival with New Grass Revival, alongside Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, and Pat Flynn. After their 1990 split, Cowan pursued solo rock and country-rock with Sky Kings. He released solo albums with Sugar Hill, including an ambitious 2000 self-titled work, and continued with projects like "Sixty" in 2014.
