Born Clifton Blackburn in Chicago, Kahil El'Zabar is a renowned jazz percussionist and bandleader blending African traditions with modern jazz. He founded Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, collaborated with legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Nina Simone, and Archie Shepp, and earned acclaim for iconic albums like *Three Gentlemen from Chicago* and *Africa N'Da Blues.* Known for his innovative style and leadership in the AACM, he’s also featured in the documentary *Be Known: The Mystery of Kahil El Zabar.*
David Murray, born in Berkeley, CA, is a prolific jazz saxophonist and bass clarinetist known for his deep tone and wide vibrato. He's a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet and has released nearly 100 albums. Influenced by Albert Ayler and John Coltrane, he blends free jazz with traditional jazz standards. Notable works include "Flowers for Albert" and "Ballads for Bass Clarinet." Murray has collaborated with Hamid Drake, Brad Jones, Grateful Dead's Bob Weir, and others. His honors include releases like "Dark Star: The Music of the Grateful Dead" and "Be My Monster Love" featuring Macy Gray and Gregory Porter.
