Born in New York’s Greenwich Village, Najee is a saxophonist and flute player known for crossover jazz and R&B. His Grammy-nominated Najee’s Theme (1986) hit No. 1; Tokyo Blue went gold. A two-time NAACP Award winner, he’s worked with Prince and Chaka Khan.
Harlem-born hip-hop pioneer Kurtis Blow (born Kurtis Walker) was the first commercially successful rapper and first to sign and release a major-label album. His 1980 gold single The Breaks and album Kurtis Blow helped bring rap mainstream.
Alyson Williams is a vocalist known for new jack swing and soul ballads. Daughter of trumpeter/bandleader Bobby Booker, she sang background for artists like Bobby Brown and Melba Moore, joined High Fashion (1982), then went solo. Her albums include Raw (1989).
Self-taught drummer Lenny White is best known for Chick Corea’s Return To Forever (1973–76). He played with Jackie McLean (1968) and appeared on Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew (1969), working with jazz greats like Freddie Hubbard and Stan Getz.
