UB40, a reggae band formed in Birmingham, rose from working-class roots to global fame, selling 100M records. Known for hits like "Red Red Wine", they became icons in the genre.
Musical Youth, formed in Birmingham, hit it big with "Pass the Dutchie" in 1982. Known for ska and reggae, their lineup included Dennis Seaton and the Waite brothers. Collaborated with Donna Summer; disbanded in 1985 but later reformed.
Ali Campbell, born in Birmingham, England, is a prominent figure in pop-reggae as the former lead singer of UB40. Known for covers like "Red Red Wine" and collaborations with artists like Pamela Starks, Campbell's solo career includes hits like "That Look in Your Eyes" and top albums including "Running Free." He often collaborates with former bandmates like Mickey Virtue and Astro.
The Boomtown Rats, formed in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland in 1975, fused punk energy and new wave style, gaining U.K. fame with hits like "I Don't Like Mondays." Fronted by Bob Geldof, known for global humanitarian efforts like Live Aid, they released notable albums, including *The Fine Art of Surfacing*. The band split in 1986, reunited in 2013, and dropped *Citizens of Boomtown* in 2020.
Red Box, emerging in the early '80s, pioneered Tribal Pop with hits like "Lean on Me" and "For America." Their albums "The Circle and the Square" and "Motive" became cult classics. They returned in 2012 and are known for diverse and eclectic music, performing widely across Europe. Key members include Simon Toulson-Clarke and Del Adams.
Formed in 1970 in Toxteth, Liverpool, The Real Thing is Britain’s longest-established soul band. Known for hits like "You To Me Are Everything," they remain the UK's most successful black group. Dubbed "The Black Beatles," their distinct sound captivated fans. A 2019 documentary, “Everything – The Real Thing Story,” highlighted their career.
Midlands-born Jaki Graham, a leading UK soul singer, excelled in R&B/dance with '80s hits like "Set Me Free." Famous for collaborations with UB40 & others, she remains popular in Japan.
Nik Kershaw, born in the UK, burst into the '80s pop scene with hits like "Wouldn't It Be Good." He collaborated with Elton John, Sia, and wrote for Chesney Hawkes. Known for his unique voice, he still performs live.
Go West, a British pop duo formed in 1982, became '80s icons with hits like "We Close Our Eyes" and "King of Wishful Thinking." Known for blending pop, soul, and new wave, they won a 1986 BRIT Award and scored success with hits featured in the Pretty Woman soundtrack.
