Marcus Shelby, born in Anchorage, Alaska, is a renowned jazz bassist, composer, bandleader, and educator. He is celebrated for large-scale jazz orchestral works exploring African American history and social movements, integrating spirituals and blues. Notable compositions include "Harriet Tubman" and "Soul of the Movement." He received the Charles Mingus Scholarship and collaborated with artists like Tom Waits and Angela Y. Davis. Shelby also voiced Ray Gardener in Pixar's "Soul."
