Stephanie Mills, born in Brooklyn, is a soulful powerhouse known for “Home” from The Wiz. Her Grammy-winning “Never Knew Love Like This Before” highlights her blend of gospel, soul, and funk. Collaborating with artists like Teddy Pendergrass, she became an R&B icon with dynamic live performances and enduring hits.
Born in Philadelphia, R&B legend Patti LaBelle is renowned for versatile vocals and hits like "If Only You Knew" and "On My Own." Starting with the group LaBelle, she soared solo, winning Grammy Awards for albums like "Burnin'" and "Live! One Night Only." Known for genres from soul to jazz, she collaborated with artists like Michael McDonald and David Rubinson. Also an actor, LaBelle has appeared on "American Horror Story" and has a popular baked goods line.
Philadelphia-born R&B/soul icon Frankie Beverly founded/led Maze; laid-back, joyful sound. Hits: “Before I Let Go,” “Joy & Pain,” “Back in Stride.” 7 gold LPs, NAACP Lifetime Award; backed by Marvin Gaye.
Frankie Beverly, born in Philadelphia, pioneered Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, an influential R&B band known for its soulful sound and live shows. Inspired by Marvin Gaye, Beverly crafted hits like "Happy Feelin's" and "Back in Stride." Maze, popular in the '70s and '80s, earned several gold albums despite limited pop hits. Beverly's bands evolved from Philadelphia's Raw Soul to Maze in the San Francisco Bay Area, with Marvin Gaye facilitating their Capitol Records contract. Despite few '90s hits, Maze's live performances maintained a loyal fan base. Beverly passed away on September 10, 2024.
