About Old 97s

Formed in Dallas, Texas, Old 97s emerged in the early 90s with an adrenaline-pumping blend of rock and roll swagger, punk snarl, and old-school twang. Their unique sound quickly brought them into the national spotlight. Conventional wisdom places the band at the forefront of the musical movement known as alternative country. However, as the New York Times put it, their sound leaned more toward the Clash than the Carter Family.

Musical Style and Reputation

Fueled by breakneck tempos, distorted guitars, and wry storytelling, the foursome built a reputation for high-energy albums and even higher-energy shows. They performed everywhere from Conan and Letterman to Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, earning countless rave reviews.

Rhett Miller's Solo Career

On top of his work with Old 97s, Rhett Miller established himself as a prolific solo artist. He released eight studio albums under his own name, garnering wide-ranging acclaim and landing in numerous prominent film and television soundtracks.

Rhett Miller's Writing

Beyond music, Miller is a gifted writer. He has contributed essays and short stories to The Atlantic, Salon, McSweeney's, and Sports Illustrated, among others. In 2019, he released his debut book, a collection of poetry for children, published by Little, Brown, and Company.
