Grigory Sokolov, born in Leningrad, is a celebrated Russian pianist known for his live concert recordings and virtuosity in classical works by Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin. He became the youngest Tchaikovsky Competition winner at 16 and faced Soviet restrictions until his Western debut in the 1980s. Sokolov has recorded with Melodiya, Opus 111, Naïve, and Deutsche Grammophon.
