The Phoenix Symphony, established in 1947 in Phoenix, Arizona, is the state's only full-time professional symphony orchestra. An ECHO Award recipient, the Symphony is recognized for artistic excellence, community engagement, and collaborations with renowned artists and institutions.
"Rhapsody in Blue," composed by George Gershwin in 1924, is an iconic American musical composition. Originating in New York City, it masterfully blends classical music with jazz and blues, creating a distinctly American, modernist style. Known for its memorable melodies and the famous opening clarinet glissando, it established Gershwin as an eminent composer. Commissioned by Paul Whiteman and orchestrated by Ferde Grofé, this work is celebrated for defining the Jazz Age.
