Yasiin Bey, born Dante Terrell Smith in Brooklyn, New York, is a celebrated rapper, singer, and actor. Formerly known as Mos Def, he is a prominent figure in conscious hip-hop, recognized for intricate wordplay and social commentary. His influential albums include "Black on Both Sides" and "The Ecstatic." He is known for collaborations with Talib Kweli as Black Star, and has earned Grammy nominations and acting awards for roles in films like "Something the Lord Made."
Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco (Wasalu Muhammad Jaco) broke out on Kanye West’s “Touch the Sky.” His albums Food & Liquor, Lasers, and Food & Liquor II hit the Top Ten; “Daydreamin’” won a Grammy. Later released Drogas Light/Wave and taught rap at MIT.
Robert Glasper is known for the Black Radio series and genre-bridging work in touring, film scoring, composing, and producing. He has 5 Grammy wins and 11 nominations, plus an Emmy for a 13th song with Common and Karriem Riggins.
Derrick Hodge, a Philadelphia-born bassist and composer, excels in jazz, cinematic, and R&B genres. Hodge debuted solo with "Live Today" in 2013, followed by "The Second" in 2016. He's played pivotal roles on albums like Maxwell's "BLACKsummers'night" and Glasper's "Black Radio." His third solo project, "Color of Noize," released in 2020, showcases his innovative fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and soul.
