Born in Harlem, New York, to Jamaican parents, Harry Belafonte (1927-2023) was a singer, actor, and civil rights activist. He popularized calypso music, earning him the title "King of Calypso," with hits like "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" and "Jamaica Farewell". His musical range included folk and blues. A Grammy, Emmy, and Tony winner, he was a close confidant of Martin Luther King Jr. and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
