Fountains of Rome (Italian: Fontane di Roma), P 106, is a symphonic tone poem for orchestra completed in 1916 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi. It is the first of his three tone poems about Rome, preceding Pines of Rome (1924) and Roman Festivals (1928). Comprising four movements, each section depicts a specific Roman fountain at a different time of day: the Valle Giulia at dawn, the Triton at morning, the Trevi at noon, and the Villa Medici at sunset. Celebrated for its brilliant, coloristic orchestration influenced by Respighi's studies with Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, the piece achieved international renown following a successful 1918 performance conducted by Arturo Toscanini.
"The Pines of Rome" is a celebrated symphonic poem by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, born in Bologna. This orchestral masterpiece, part of his Roman Trilogy, vividly portrays scenes of Rome with colorful orchestration, blending classical and modern styles. Known for incorporating elements like Gregorian chant, it stands as one of his most performed works, earning international acclaim.
Xian Zhang, a Chinese-American conductor born in Dandong, China, is renowned for her dynamic classical music interpretations. She serves as Music Director for the New Jersey Symphony and Seattle Symphony. Zhang was the first woman to lead a major Italian symphony orchestra and hold a titled role with a BBC orchestra. Her Grammy-winning album "Letters for the Future" highlights her collaborations. She champions Chinese composers.
