San Francisco Symphony’s Grammy Award-winning in-house label, SFS Media, founded in 2001, produces and distributes acclaimed orchestral, choral, opera, and contemporary recordings featuring conductors Michael Tilson Thomas and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Founded in Cleveland in 1918 by Adella Prentiss Hughes, The Cleveland Orchestra is led by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst (since 2002). The New York Times called it “the best in America.” It launched Adella streaming, On a Personal Note podcast, and a recording label.
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), a French composer of Swiss-Basque descent, is celebrated for his meticulous craftsmanship and masterful orchestration. Often associated with Impressionism, he blended classical forms with modernism, jazz, and Spanish influences. His iconic works include Boléro, Pavane pour une infante défunte, and the ballet Daphnis et Chloé. He remains one of France's most popular composers.
Igor Stravinsky, the Russian-born titan of 20th-century music, revolutionized classical sound with his bold rhythms and innovative harmonies. His iconic ballets "The Firebird," "Petrushka," and the riot-inducing "The Rite of Spring," created for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, remain cornerstones of modernism. He also explored neoclassicism and serialism.
Richard Strauss, born in Munich, Germany, was a leading late Romantic and early Modern German composer and conductor. Renowned for his tone poems, including "Also sprach Zarathustra", and operas like "Der Rosenkavalier", he mastered orchestral and vocal composition. Strauss collaborated notably with librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal. He was also a successful conductor of orchestras and director of opera houses.
Beijing-born pianist Yuja Wang became a star by 21. She won the 2001 Sendai International Music Competition, studied at Curtis Institute, and debuted on Deutsche Grammophon. Known for Russian virtuoso repertory, The Berlin Recital (2018) and The Blue Hour.
A highly acclaimed Finnish conductor and cellist known for his rapid rise to international prominence, currently serving as the chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic and music director of the Orchestre de Paris.
Karina Canellakis is an in-demand conductor known for emotionally charged performances, technical command, and interpretive depth. She is Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and RSB.
