About Subatomic Sound System

NYC's Subatomic Sound System has established themselves as the premier dub performance hybrid of live instruments, vocalists, and electronics. Subatomic has been on an over 2-decade mission across the globe forging a future foundation style built on the bass-heavy, spacious soundscapes, and live improvisational remixing of classic 1970s Jamaican dub and conscious reggae music in the context of electronic bass music. Using the latest technology, they pioneered a unique performance style that blurs the lines between DJing and a live band.

These efforts gained the attention of dub and reggae pioneer Lee Scratch Perry, the genius producer and songwriter behind Bob Marley, who for a decade employed Subatomic Sound as his go-to band for re-inventing his Black Ark Studio sound live on stage. Grammy-winning Black Uhuru vocalist Mykal Rose then tapped Subatomic as his band and producers of last year’s acclaimed Rockin Like A Champion album with Hollie Cook.

Collaborations and Performances

All the while Subatomic has worked steady with Screechy Dan on the mic rocking stages and churning out big tunes like My Sound is Heavy, Champion Sound, Babylon Soon Fall, and their relick of Chase the Devil with Lee Perry. Subatomic is spearheaded by producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist Emch, who arranges and manipulates both prerecorded music instruments and effects with the live musicians to create a real-time musical dialogue.

The core live musicians include Jamaican percussion legend and Black Ark veteran Larry McDonald (Peter Tosh, Skatalites, Gil Scott-Heron) and Troy Shaka Simms (Brooklyn Gypsies, Mobius Collective) on sax and horn arrangements.

Touring History

In the past decades, Subatomic has toured as a live band, sound system, or selector across the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, Middle East, Russia, India, and Mexico, including appearances at France's Telerama Dub Festival, UK's Positive Vibes Fest, The Marley's Kaya Fest, Coachella, Hungary's Ozora Festival, Dubai's SoleDXB, Cali Roots, Cali Vibes, and opening for Stephen and Julian Marley's US tours.
