Sun Ra & The Arkestra

Sun Ra & The Arkestra, formed in the mid-1950s, pioneered Afrofuturism from Birmingham, Alabama. Led by Sun Ra and later Marshall Allen, their experimental jazz blends swing, free jazz, and electronic sounds. Known for cosmic philosophy and theatrical performances, they received a Grammy nomination for "Lights on a Satellite". Their evolving lineup and unique style influenced many.

Marshall Allen

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Marshall Allen is a renowned alto saxophonist known for leading Sun Ra's Arkestra. He blends swing, bop, and free jazz, and worked with Babatunde Olatunji, Odean Pope, and more.

Colin Self

Oregon-born artist/composer/puppeteer based Brooklyn & Berlin; experimental, spiritual community performance. Runs XOIR (alt choir), co-founded TIAPS w/ Monica Mirabile. Operas: Tip the Ivy; Kompass (Hannover State Opera).
