Sam Bush, born in Bowling Green, KY, is a pivotal figure in progressive bluegrass, known for his masterful mandolin and fiddle skills. Founder of the New Grass Revival, he blended bluegrass with rock, jazz, and reggae. Bush's collaborations include working with Emmylou Harris and co-leading the bluegrass supergroup Strength in Numbers. He earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association and was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. Popular albums include King of My World and Storyman. Dubbed the "Father of Newgrass," he's honored in his hometown.
The Lil Smokies, formed in Missoula, blend rock energy with '70s Laurel Canyon songwriting. Their third album, *Tornillo*, produced by Bill Reynolds, showcases their roots reimagining. They have a national following and have performed at festivals like Red Rocks and Telluride.
Victoria, B.C. folk duo Ocie Elliott, composed of Jon Middleton and Sierra Lundy, create evocative acoustic music. Sierra Ferrell, a celebrated West Virginia-born roots musician, is known for her eclectic style, acclaimed debut 'Long Time Coming,' and winning Emerging Act at the Americana Honors & Awards. Collaborating with artists like Margo Price and Old Crow Medicine Show, her album 'Trail Of Flowers' showcases her storytelling with producers Eddie Spear and Gary Paczosa.
Punch Brothers, formed by Chris Thile after Nickel Creek, blend bluegrass, classical, and jazz. Known for virtuosic skill, they've topped bluegrass charts, won a Grammy, and collaborated with Jon Brion and T-Bone Burnett. Notable works include "All Ashore" and "Hell on Church Street." Their debut featured "The Blind Leaving the Blind" at Carnegie Hall, and they've contributed to films like The Hunger Games.
The Fretliners, a powerful bluegrass quartet, formed in a Cloverlick banjo shop, won Telluride and Rockygrass Festivals in 2023, and released a celebrated debut album.
