Brooklyn producer Steve Standard as Strafe made electro classic “Set It Off” (1984, Jus Born); backed by DJ Danny Krivit, played Roxy/Danceteria; toured w/ Shannon.
C+C Music Factory, formed in 1989 in New York City by David Cole and Robert Clivillés, pioneered an infectious blend of house, hip hop, and pop. Known for hits like "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)," they earned 35 awards, including five American Music Awards. Their influential sound featured vocalists such as Freedom Williams and Martha Wash.
TKA, born in NYC’s Latin club scene, were signed by Tommy Boy in 1987. They blend love ballads with hip-hop beats. Known for "Scars of Love" and collaborations in the freestyle genre.
Dance-pop singer George Lamond, born George Garcia in Washington, D.C., gained fame with hits like "Bad of the Heart" and "Without You." He collaborated with producers Chris Barbosa and Mark Ligget, and released albums including "Bad of the Heart" and "Entrega."
Puerto Rican-American Lisette Melendez, born in East Harlem, gained fame in the early '90s for reviving Latin freestyle. Judy Torres, born in the 1980s dance-pop era, is known for her powerful voice and classics like "No Reason to Cry." A radio host on WKTU, she's also explored musical theater, maintaining a strong presence in freestyle music.
