Formed in New York City’s Latin club scene, TKA landed a break at a sweet 16 party and were signed to Tommy Boy in 1987. Known for love ballad harmonies over hip-hop beats, they released Scars of Love (1987) and Louder Than Love (1991).
Johnny O, born Juan Antonio Ortiz in Brooklyn, New York, is a freestyle and dance-pop singer of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent. Known as "The King of Freestyle," he achieved fame with hits like "Fantasy Girl," "Memories," and the duet "Dream Boy / Dream Girl" with Cynthia. His notable singles include "In the Shadow of the Almighty" and "So in Love." He is celebrated for his romantic ballads and dance anthems.
Dance/freestyle artist Cynthia began in 1987, signing to MicMac Records. She released Cynthia and Cynthia II, with singles like Change on Me, Endless Night and Love Me Tonight, plus a Johnny O duet. Later joined Tommy Boy; club single How I Love Him featured K7.
Judy Torres is an ’80s dance-pop and freestyle singer who began her career at 17. Known for the freestyle classic No Reason to Cry from the album Love Story, she also released My Soul and Love You for All Seasons and hosts a show on New York’s WKTU.
The Cover Girls are a New York dance-pop group formed in 1986 by Andy “Panda” Tripoli and Sal Abbatiello. Their 1987 debut Show Me placed five songs on Billboard charts; “Because of You” and “Promise Me” hit Hot 100 Top 40.
Sweet Sensation is a Bronx- and Manhattan-bred freestyle group formed by Mari and Margie Fernandez and Betty LeBron. Debuted in 1986 with Hooked on You. Their 1988 album Take It While It's Hot spawned four Hot 100 hits; If Wishes Came True hit No. 1.
Planet Patrol, originating from Boston, Massachusetts, pioneered electro funk and hip-hop. Formed by Arthur Baker and John Robie, the group is renowned for fusing electro beats with soulful vocals. Their 1983 self-titled album featured popular songs like "Play at Your Own Risk" and "Cheap Thrills." "Play at Your Own Risk" is widely recognized as an anthem for street dancers and influenced the freestyle music scene.
