La Citadelle de Marseille Reviews

A 17th century fortress located opposite of Fort Saint-Jean and south of the Old Port. It was unfortunately closed at the time of visit.

Fort Saint-Nicolas is another fascinating historical site in Marseille. This fort, located near the Old Port, was built during the 17th century as part of the city's coastal defenses. It was designed by the renowned military architect Vauban, and its strategic location allowed it to protect the entrance to the Old Port. One interesting fact is that Fort Saint-Nicolas and its neighboring counterpart, Fort Saint-Jean, were actually connected by a chain that could be raised to block the entrance to the harbor and prevent enemy ships from entering. This ingenious defensive feature showcases the advanced military engineering of its time. The fort has witnessed various historical events, including the French Revolution and World War II. Today, it stands as a testament to Marseille's maritime heritage and offers a picturesque view of the harbor and the Mediterranean Sea.

I had the chance to walk around Fort Saint-Nicolas/Entrecasteaux during my recent visit to Marseille, and it was truly an impressive sight. Even though the fort was closed to visitors, I could still admire the stunning architecture and the intricate details of the walls and towers. The fort sits on a hill overlooking the beautiful port of Marseille, and the views from there are breathtaking. I would have loved to go inside and explore the fort's history and secrets, but just being in its presence was enough to transport me back in time. If you're a history buff or an architecture enthusiast, I highly recommend a visit to Fort Saint-Nicolas/Entrecasteaux. Even if you can't go inside, the exterior is still worth the trip. Overall, I was very impressed with the fort and its surroundings, and it's definitely a must-see if you're in Marseille.
