The MARTA Herford provides galleries for the exhibition of art, furniture design, and architectural design. The fundamental design strategy involves the incorporation of a fragment of an existing industrial building with new buildings located to the South and to the North of the existing building, so that the existing building becomes the centerpiece of the new museum complex. Visitors enter the complex through a new central entry plaza that is flanked on both sides by the new buildings. The existing building consists of 3,425 square meters and includes the lobby for the complex and a retail store on the ground level, as well as galleries and a furniture testing area on the upper levels. The building to the South includes a cluster of smaller galleries providing 730 square meters of multipurpose exhibition space surrounding a larger gallery providing an additional 445 square meters of multipurpose exhibition space. The building to the North includes a gallery of 345 square meters devoted primarily to furniture design but which is also available to fulfill multiple exhibition and event uses. A restaurant located at the Southeast corner of the complex overlooks a gentle bend in a river adjacent to the site. The original character of the existing building will be maintained. The exterior of both new buildings is clad in brick and stainless steel.

Really special museum, the expo was very modern, I expected it to be a bit larger, but nevertheless very interesting, as there were videos as well, to enlighten certain subjects.

Really nice building with modern exhibitions. It is not that large, and the art is very modern. The free audio web guide is really well done. The documentation of the design price on recycling was the best. The cafe overlooks the local river and is a nice place to relax. Definitively worth a visit.
