A magnificent church in what is deemed to be possibly the prettiest town in the Rioja region. I cannot vouch for that as I haven't visited them all but if there is a prettier one it will have to be something very special. The church is simply breathtaking in its size and structure. One simply marvels at the skill of the craftsmen and the vision of the architects. As an agnostic one also has to ponder on how the vast sums of money might have been better spent, but be grateful nevertheless for the legacy of that indulgence. There are many spectacular secular buildings in Briones . It is a town one simplý should not miss if in the area. Avoid weekends....crowded, and when we were there we had to suffer a musical performance in the main Plaza....so noisy that we left and moved on to San Vicente de La Sonsierra. Also worth a visit though not as rewarding as Briones and a mere 5 miles away.

Simply beautiful, completely deserted at this time of year.

From the ruins of the castle we continue towards the church of the Asuncion, accessing the square through an arch. The tower is under construction. The guide explained the altarpiece, chapels and took us up to the choir, where its organ stands out. The sacristy decorated with numerous paintings

The main façade is in Renaissance style. The bell tower stands next to the door and was built on top of a previous one from the 16th century that was damaged by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, and was completed four years later. The baroque organ, with trumpet from 1767 with a rococo style furniture, caught my attention. The choir is supported by segmental arches and is accessed by a monumental side staircase with a decorated balustrade. This church is a true museum and the best thing is that access is free. Of great beauty on the outside and also on the inside. What surprised me most is the large size of its interior columns, the beauty of its sacristy, the organ, the choir, the access staircase to the choir... We went at Christmas time and they had a beautiful Nativity scene.
