Grand Opera House Reviews

Came here to see Shrek The Musical UK Tour while staying in York. The theatre was really nice, and the staff were welcoming and friendly. Sound and effects were great, and it's a pretty big theatre. The show was brilliant! Would happily see a show here again!

Went to watch sister act and the show was absolutely excellent, I'd never seen a performance like it! However, not only was the heat unbearable with no air conditioning (we were tempted to leave at the interval but decided to push through) We had to use brochures as fans to somewhat terribly attempt to keep cool. The prices of drinks were quite expensive at £6 for 2 bottles of water I'd return, just In the cooler months and definitely won't make the mistake of paying for drinks Most staff were friendly

The seats in the stalls have leg room, which is very welcome. No middle aisle though so it's a lot of people to climb over to get to a middle seat. Not enough seating or standing space before the performance. 11 ladies toilets for the entire theatre, interval queues were hideous, I have no idea how this is a manageable provision for shows with lots of children in the audience, like a panto. Most of the staff seem very young and while this isn't an issue, it makes the theatre feel more like a 'venu' than a theatre. Also getting drinks delivered to the seat is a ridiculous idea when it has to be handed all the way down a row.

The lounge experience was very good, lovely staff who were very helpful and friendly. Our stalls seat in row G had plenty of leg room but despite being about a third back the stage is still quite high, unusually so. However, I ordered a medium white wine for the interval. It was probably 175ml. There was no price list and I didn’t overly concern myself when they came for the contactless payment only to find out later they charged me £11.05 for that wine. That makes it a £47 bottle of wine. They sell a 250ml can of the same wine to order to your seat for £9 so I’ve no idea why a lounge guest gets charged so much more. There’s no contact details for the theatre to be found so I can’t query it.

Another return to the cheap seats! Great value for money on the very back row of the upper circle. The place was packed; noisier than the panto! Still comfortable and a brilliant performance.
