Born in New York, conductor Marin Alsop studied at Yale and Juilliard. A student of Leonard Bernstein, she became the first woman to lead a major American orchestra as principal conductor of the Baltimore Symphony in 2007. She has led orchestras worldwide, won a MacArthur fellowship, and recorded extensively.
