Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was an American jazz pianist, composer, and big-band leader from Washington, D.C. Widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz composers of all time, he led his eponymous orchestra for more than half a century, created thousands of scores including classics like "Satin Doll" and "Sophisticated Lady," and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Columbus, Ohio-born jazz pianist/composer Aaron Diehl blends swinging acoustic jazz and classical traditions. He toured with Wynton Marsalis as a teen, played on Cécile McLorin Salvant’s Grammy-winning albums, and led The Vagabond and Zodiac Suite.
Conneaut, Ohio-born conductor Robert Spano led the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as music director (2001–2021), winning multiple Grammy Awards. Known for contemporary repertoire, he debuted at the Met in 2018 conducting the U.S. premiere of Nico Muhly’s Marnie.
The New Jersey Symphony, founded in 1922 by Philip James, is the state orchestra of New Jersey. Renowned for its classical music performances, it has earned Emmy and Grammy Awards. The Symphony is celebrated for its collaborations and for appointing Henry Lewis as the first African-American music director of a major US orchestra.
